Ryan. Thomas Darby


Thomas Darby Ryan (1864-1927).

Born in England he came to NZ in 1865. as a Rugby player he was a member of the first All Black team to tour Australia in 1884: he later became a champion yachtsman. In C 1892 he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris , where he met & befriended C F Goldie, who he later accompanied on sketching tours in Rotorua & taupo. He also ran a boat service for 20 years in Taupo: it was there he married the daughter of a Maori Chief (who helped Goldie to ask Maori people to sit for portraits). He spent the last 7 years of his life on Great Barrier Island. 

Represented: AAG, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Hocken, Rotorua Museum, Te Pap & Turnbull.
