Akins. Florence

Born (1907). The first student to be awarded the Dip. F.A. at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts. She joined the staff in 1936 & taught there until her retirement in 1969. She was asked in the 40's to start a weaving class & was fortunate to meet Josephine Glasgow (nee Mulvaney) (1901-1967) a pioneer NZ weaver who agreed to teach her. She was then able to start NZ's first formal weaving class. Akins painted Portraits, Still Life, Landscape & some work in Metal. Turned 100 in 2006. There was a small report in the Nelson Mail for her 103rd birthday in 2009.
